Kolkata: The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) Kolkata bench experienced a cyber security breach during an online court proceeding when an unknown perpetrator displayed inappropriate content around 2.52 pm on July 30. The unauthorized screen sharing, which lasted for three to four minutes, disrupted the court session presided over by tribunal members.

According to the complaint filed by a senior functionary of the NCLT’s Kolkata bench with Bidhannagar Cyber Cell, the perpetrator used a profile named “John Galvenstone” to access the meeting. The court officer attempted to halt the screen sharing but was unsuccessful. The situation was eventually resolved when the hybrid court operator terminated the meeting temporarily before resuming proceedings.

According to cops, the virtual court link, created on Dec 14, 2022, and last renewed on Oct 23, 2024, was operating under the official email ID registrar-kol@nclt.gov.in. The Bidhannagar Cyber Crime PS has registered under sections 66C, 66E, 67, and 67A of the Information Technology Act.

The IP address was traced, and data collection on the same began, said investigators. The court resumed its proceedings at 4.50 pm after the disruption.
