Cybersecurity threat trends that will impact Indian businesses in 2025, Barracuda highlights, ET CISO

Security experts at Barracuda Networks, Inc., a leading cybersecurity company providing complete protection against complex threats have revealed their perspectives on how the cyberthreat landscape is likely to evolve in 2025 and the key trends organisations in India should prepare for.

Among other things, the experts believe that AI-powered attacks will continue to evolve, making attacks increasingly personalised, faster, and harder to detect. Attackers are expected to leverage AI-based automation to execute large-scale attacks targeting security gaps and weaknesses. These AI-enhanced threats will take many forms, from finely tuned phishing emails to highly adaptive malware that can learn and evade detection systems.

The experts expect to see a rise in multi-channel, multi-stage attacks. This will include attacks that infiltrate one platform, such as email, messaging, or collaboration platforms, and then expand laterally to others. More attacks will take advantage of security gaps in interconnected devices as well as insecure identity and authentication measures.

As security tools continue to adapt to the latest threats, attackers will become more determined about evading detection. They will increasingly leverage novel tools and techniques to help them breach systems, exfiltrate data, or compromise infrastructure without triggering any immediate alarms.

Parag Khurana, Country Manager, India at Barracuda Networks, said, “Cybersecurity is an intricate ongoing chess match between defenders and attackers. Many organisations in India recognise the need for effective security, and the Indian government has recently announced further new measures to identify and protect against cybercrime. These are welcome developments, but as we move into 2025, the true measure of an organisation’s cyber resilience lies not only in its ability to detect and prevent cyberthreats, but in its capacity to respond to and recover from security incidents with agility and intelligence.”The evolving threat landscape demands a multi-faceted approach. Organisations are advised to maintain comprehensive asset inventories, prioritise continuous cybersecurity training and to consider investing in a managed extended detection and response (XDR) solution. Managed XDR integrates multiple security layers, such as endpoints, networks, emails, servers and cloud, into a single intelligent security platform covering all attack surfaces, supported by a 24/7 security operations centre (SOC). Managed XDR boosts cyber resilience by significantly reducing the time it takes to respond to and neutralise cyberthreats – from days or hours to just minutes – while reducing the burden on over-stretched IT teams and resources.

What is Firewall? A Firewall is a network security device that monitors and filters incoming and outgoing network traffic based on an organization's previously established security policies. At its most basic, a firewall is essentially the barrier that sits between a private internal network and the public Internet.

Secure your network at the gateway against threats such as intrusions, Viruses, Spyware, Worms, Trojans, Adware, Keyloggers, Malicious Mobile Code (MMC), and other dangerous applications for total protection in a convenient, affordable subscription-based service. Modern threats like web-based malware attacks, targeted attacks, application-layer attacks, and more have had a significantly negative effect on the threat landscape. In fact, more than 80% of all new malware and intrusion attempts are exploiting weaknesses in applications, as opposed to weaknesses in networking components and services. Stateful firewalls with simple packet filtering capabilities were efficient blocking unwanted applications as most applications met the port-protocol expectations. Administrators could promptly prevent an unsafe application from being accessed by users by blocking the associated ports and protocols.
