JAIPUR: With the wedding season in full swing, the city police have issued a warning to the public not to open wedding invitations files sent via WhatsApp from unknown numbers.
Conmen are embedding phishing links in such e-invite cards, cops said. “Cyber fraudsters are using wedding invitations to deceive people and steal their personal information,” police said in a statement posted online. When downloaded, these wedding invitations install unauthorised apps, allowing fraudsters to collect and transmit sensitive personal data. This data includes passwords, banking details, and contacts, which scammers can use for identity theft or financial fraud.
“To avoid being scammed, do not download attachments from unknown numbers. Report such incidents immediately to the cyber helpline at 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in,” said the police.
To avoid falling prey, police advised the public to refrain from downloading attachments sent not only through WhatsApp but also via email. “It’s essential to verify the sender before opening any file or link. Enabling security features on the device, such as antivirus software and app permissions, can also help prevent malware installation,” the officer said. Cops also emphasised the importance of regularly updating WhatsApp and device software to patch any vulnerabilities as well as enabling two-factor authentication for added security. “Stay cautious of unsolicited invites and always be wary of offers that seem too good to be true,” the officer said.
