The theft of an iPhone belonging to Colonel Santosh Kumar Mishra has led to the unearthing of a sophisticated inter-state cyber fraud gang, specialising in stealing mobile phones and using them to execute financial crimes. The gang was busted through the joint efforts of the PGI police and the cyber-crime cell, Hazratganj.
Two key members of the gang, Govinda Kumar Mahato (32) and Suraj Nonia (25), along with a 15-year-old accomplice, were apprehended from Teenpahar, Jharkhand. The police recovered seven stolen mobile phones and six SIM cards from the accused.
Modus operandi
According to DCP (East) Shashank Singh, the gang targeted people in crowded areas such as markets, fairs, and bus terminals in major cities across India. After stealing mobile phones, they bypassed security features like iCloud locks and the ‘Find My Device’ setting. They then created fraudulent digital wallets using SIM cards and bank accounts linked to the phones, siphoning money through apps like Cred. The stolen phones were eventually sold through associates, and the proceeds were divided among gang members.
Colonel’s case sparks investigation
The investigation began when colonel Mishra reported a cyber fraud of Rs 5.5 lakh from his linked accounts and credit cards. His iPhone was stolen from a fruit and vegetable market near Baba Bhimrao Ambedkar University. Following his complaint, additional reports of phone thefts and subsequent cyber frauds surfaced from locations like Phoolmandi Chowk, BKT Sabzi Mandi, Viraj Khand Sabzi Mandi, and Nakhas Bazaar.
Criminal history and multi-state operations
The arrested individuals have a history of cyber fraud, with their involvement surfacing in cases across multiple states, including Hyderabad and Uttar Pradesh. In Lucknow alone, the gang is linked to a Rs 16 lakh fraud registered at the cyber police station, a Rs 6 lakh fraud in another case, and a Rs 99,000 fraud reported at Para police station.
The arrest marks a significant step in curbing inter-state cybercrime and ensuring justice for victims. Further investigations are underway to trace the gang’s network and recover stolen funds.
