Meta denies Muse AI agent accessed private messages without user permission

Meta has denied claims that its Muse AI agent accessed a user’s private messages without permission, saying the Messages integration requires users to explicitly enable access, TechCrunch reported.

The response came after Inc. columnist Jason Aten claimed Muse had read his private messages even though Full Disk Access was disabled on his Mac.

“The Messages integration in the Muse app for Mac is entirely opt-in,” Meta Vice-President of communications Andy Stone said in a post on X.

Stone said users must enable both Full Disk Access and the Messages connector before Muse can read content from Messages.

“It can’t read your messages unless you do this,” he said.

Meta explains permissions required by Muse

Meta Superintelligence Labs executive David Singleton also responded to Aten, saying users must go through ‘three separate steps of application-level permissions and built-in macOS system-level protections’ before Muse can access their messages.

Singleton said these protections cannot be circumvented even if the Muse application has a bug.

Users must explicitly grant Muse Full Disk Access and then select the level of access the agent receives to the Messages app. The available options include None, Read only or Read. Without Full Disk Access enabled, these options are unavailable.

Granting Full Disk Access also requires users to manually confirm the action through macOS Settings and triggers a full restart of the Muse app, Singleton said.

Journalist says Full Disk Access was disabled

Aten, however, claimed that Full Disk Access was switched off when Muse read his messages.

He also said that when asked how it had accessed the messages, Muse responded that it was syncing his ‘device notifications’. Aten believed this meant the AI agent was receiving text from incoming banner notifications on his Mac.

Singleton disputed that explanation, saying the AI was confused and had incorrectly explained what had happened. He also pointed to Meta’s information about Muse’s security architecture and bug bounty process.

Muse faces another permissions complaint

The dispute follows another incident involving Muse in which YouTuber Matt Robb said the AI agent mishandled a task related to selling items on Facebook Marketplace.

Robb said the incident resulted in his address being shared and a buyer arriving while he was not at home.

Meta investigated the incident, while Robb acknowledged that he had granted Muse a permission that allowed the situation to occur.

What is Firewall? A Firewall is a network security device that monitors and filters incoming and outgoing network traffic based on an organization's previously established security policies. At its most basic, a firewall is essentially the barrier that sits between a private internal network and the public Internet.

Secure your network at the gateway against threats such as intrusions, Viruses, Spyware, Worms, Trojans, Adware, Keyloggers, Malicious Mobile Code (MMC), and other dangerous applications for total protection in a convenient, affordable subscription-based service. Modern threats like web-based malware attacks, targeted attacks, application-layer attacks, and more have had a significantly negative effect on the threat landscape. In fact, more than 80% of all new malware and intrusion attempts are exploiting weaknesses in applications, as opposed to weaknesses in networking components and services. Stateful firewalls with simple packet filtering capabilities were efficient blocking unwanted applications as most applications met the port-protocol expectations. Administrators could promptly prevent an unsafe application from being accessed by users by blocking the associated ports and protocols.
