F5 Enhances Bot Defense with Device Intelligence and AI Protections, ETCISO
F5 has announced enhancements to F5 Distributed Cloud Bot Defense, adding device intelligence capabilities and protections for agentic AI.
The updates are designed to provide persistent device context and continuous risk decisioning for application security as AI agents increasingly interact with websites, mobile applications and customer portals.
Unlike basic web crawlers or automated scripts, AI agents can perform autonomous, multi-step actions on behalf of users, including executing transactions in agent-based commerce, booking travel and conducting banking operations. Because these agents can interact directly with APIs at machine speed, traditional bot management tools based on rigid “bot or not” rules can face challenges distinguishing authorised AI activity from malicious automated traffic.
F5’s approach correlates behavioural, device and client-integrity telemetry across interactions. The approach is designed to establish trust at login, web and API connections while distinguishing legitimate users and authorised AI agents from potentially malicious activity.
Key enhancements to F5 Distributed Cloud Bot Defense include:
Persistent device identification: Identifies and tracks devices across multiple sessions and accounts to identify abuse patterns such as multi-account access, credential stuffing and account takeover.
Real-time device risk scoring: Evaluates client-integrity signals in real time to detect suspicious environments, including emulators, device spoofing and tampering.
Risk-based workflow enforcement: Enables customers to configure dynamic policy actions, including allow, step-up challenge, rate-limit or block, based on assessed risk.
Agent-aware policy framework: Classifies and manages traffic from humans, trusted AI agents and malicious bots within a single policy framework on the F5 Application Delivery and Security Platform.
New agentic AI protections for F5 Distributed Cloud Bot Defense are available today. The device intelligence functionality is currently expected to reach limited availability for F5 Distributed Cloud customers in the fourth quarter of 2026, with broader availability expected thereafter.
