How Pentagon may have a ‘huge’ DeepSeek problem, IT Security News, ET CISO

Pentagon, headquarters of the US Department of Defense has banned DeepSeek after its employees connected their work computers to Chinese servers to access the new Chinese AI chatbot. DeepSeek, which claims to have developed its AI model for less than $6 million, has gained attention for its low-cost approach. It briefly became the most downloaded app on Apple’s App Store, drawing praise from tech leaders like Marc Andreessen. DeepSeek’s rapid rise has raised security concerns among US officials, leading the Pentagon to block access over data privacy risks.

A report by Bloomberg says that some employees in the US Defense Department used their work computers to access DeepSeek for at least two days before the Pentagon blocked access. The Defense Information Systems Agency, responsible for the Pentagon’s IT networks, restricted access to DeepSeek’s website on Tuesday (January 28) after concerns were raised about its use. The report, quoting a defense official, said some Pentagon computers displayed a “Website Blocked” message on Wednesday (January 29), though others could still access the chatbot.

Pentagon IT experts are investigating how employees accessed DeepSeek. Some military personnel downloaded an earlier version of its code in late 2024 without raising security concerns at the time, as its connection to China was not initially clear, the report stated. The latest release has led some military branches to review and remove AI tools linked to China from work computers.

US Navy asks its personnel to not use DeepSeek

The US Navy has asked its members not to use DeepSeek’s AI due to security and ethical concerns about its origin and use. The Navy has reportedly sent an email, warning its team to avoid using DeepSeek’s AI, both for work and personal tasks. In the email, the Navy instructed its members not to download, install, or use DeepSeek’s AI at all.“We would like to bring to your attention a critical update regarding a new AI model called DeepSeek,” the email said. It further stated that it’s “imperative” that team members do not use DeepSeek’s AI “for any work-related tasks or personal use.

What is Firewall? A Firewall is a network security device that monitors and filters incoming and outgoing network traffic based on an organization's previously established security policies. At its most basic, a firewall is essentially the barrier that sits between a private internal network and the public Internet.

Secure your network at the gateway against threats such as intrusions, Viruses, Spyware, Worms, Trojans, Adware, Keyloggers, Malicious Mobile Code (MMC), and other dangerous applications for total protection in a convenient, affordable subscription-based service. Modern threats like web-based malware attacks, targeted attacks, application-layer attacks, and more have had a significantly negative effect on the threat landscape. In fact, more than 80% of all new malware and intrusion attempts are exploiting weaknesses in applications, as opposed to weaknesses in networking components and services. Stateful firewalls with simple packet filtering capabilities were efficient blocking unwanted applications as most applications met the port-protocol expectations. Administrators could promptly prevent an unsafe application from being accessed by users by blocking the associated ports and protocols.
