OpenAI has launched Advanced Account Security (AAS), a new opt-in set of protections aimed at strengthening security for ChatGPT users, particularly those considered high-risk or high-value targets such as journalists, researchers and political dissidents.
According to a report by TechCrunch, the company announced that the programme will be available to any user who wishes to enable it, amid rising concerns around phishing and account compromise in AI chatbot usage.
As part of the initiative, digital security provider Yubico said it has partnered with OpenAI to integrate two new hardware security key products with ChatGPT accounts. The companies will release two co-branded devices — the YubiKey C NFC and YubiKey C Nano — aimed at reducing the threat of phishing attacks.
“Ultimately, our intent is to drastically reduce the threat of unauthorised access to sensitive data in OpenAI accounts worldwide,” said Jerrod Chong, CEO, Yubico, in a statement announcing the partnership.
Security keys are small physical devices that connect via USB ports and enable secure logins using cryptographic identifiers stored on the hardware. The method is widely seen as more resistant to phishing compared to traditional password-based authentication.
OpenAI said AAS is intended for individuals engaged in politically sensitive or high-risk work, including journalists, elected officials and researchers, while also being relevant for enterprise users who store confidential information in ChatGPT interactions.
The move comes as cybersecurity risks around AI usage continue to rise, with cybercriminals increasingly targeting chatbot users for personal and corporate information. OpenAI’s announcement also follows a broader industry push towards stronger digital defence frameworks.
However, the companies noted that security-key-based access carries a risk, as losing the hardware key could result in permanent loss of account access, with OpenAI unable to assist in recovery.
