The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is expanding its use of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect and counter fraud as Aadhaar authentication volumes continue to rise.

UIDAI Chairman Neelkanth Mishra said the authority uses AI-based systems alongside liveness testing for face and fingerprint authentication to counter increasingly sophisticated attempts at fraud.

“Fraudsters keep getting smarter but we are also getting smarter,” Mishra said.

UIDAI currently processes around 10 crore Aadhaar authentications a day, up from about seven crore previously, and is preparing its infrastructure to handle 25–30 crore authentications daily. More than 600 entities use Aadhaar for identity verification across sectors including banking and telecom.

UIDAI has also introduced an Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK and Face Authentication Sandbox to help banks, fintechs, government departments and other organisations integrate and test biometric authentication within their applications.

The SDK enables Aadhaar Face Authentication to be embedded directly into Android and iOS applications. It includes AI/ML-based liveness and anti-spoofing capabilities, along with secure handling and encryption of authentication data.

The Sandbox provides a controlled environment for organisations to test the complete authentication process before production deployment. This includes user provisioning and consent, face capture, liveness checks, authentication, error handling and response validation.

Organisations can also test failure scenarios such as invalid digital signatures, network interruptions, timeouts and spoofing attempts without requiring external biometric hardware.

The developments point to a broader shift towards combining AI-based fraud detection with biometric security as digital identity and authentication volumes increase. For financial institutions and other organisations relying on Aadhaar, the focus is increasingly on detecting spoofing attempts, securing biometric data and validating authentication systems before deployment.

What is Firewall? A Firewall is a network security device that monitors and filters incoming and outgoing network traffic based on an organization's previously established security policies. At its most basic, a firewall is essentially the barrier that sits between a private internal network and the public Internet.

Secure your network at the gateway against threats such as intrusions, Viruses, Spyware, Worms, Trojans, Adware, Keyloggers, Malicious Mobile Code (MMC), and other dangerous applications for total protection in a convenient, affordable subscription-based service. Modern threats like web-based malware attacks, targeted attacks, application-layer attacks, and more have had a significantly negative effect on the threat landscape. In fact, more than 80% of all new malware and intrusion attempts are exploiting weaknesses in applications, as opposed to weaknesses in networking components and services. Stateful firewalls with simple packet filtering capabilities were efficient blocking unwanted applications as most applications met the port-protocol expectations. Administrators could promptly prevent an unsafe application from being accessed by users by blocking the associated ports and protocols.
